Composer: Kenny Durham
A cool Bossa Nova tune, usually played in key of Cm by jazzers but here I wrote it out in Bm. That's how I did it in Plectrology I. Also the roginal composition used natural A at the last note in measure 5 instead of my "A#".
A little bit of theory
This tune is in key of Bm or D major but if you play the whole thing using D major scale, you'd feel awkward during measures 9 - 12. At least, that's how I felt but then my jazz friend said, "oh, these measures, you should play C major scale". This is how he explained it to me: "Look at Cmaj7 in measures 11 and 12. That's where the chord progression is resolving. That indicates that section is in key of C. The dead giveaway is G7 in measure 10 and Dm7 in measure 9. In key of C, that's ii-V-I!" Maybe our resident theory expert can chine in on this, I hope. The bottom line is you improvize using D major scale (or B minor, either natural [B C# D E F# G A] or harmonic minor [B C# D E F# G A#]) in measures 1 - 8 and 13 - 16, while you a re better off using C major scale in 9 - 12.
